Man freezes to near death after stowing away on plane from Algeria to France

A man was hospitalized with hypothermia Thursday after hiding on an Air Algerie flight from Oran, Algeria, to Paris Orly Airport.

The man was found in the landing gear compartment suffering from freezing conditions during technical checks following the flight, which landed at Orly at 10:14 a.m., according to tracking website FlightAware.

The man had no identification with him, French prosecutors told Agence France-Presse, but he is believed to be in his 20s.

Airport officials told AFP that the man’s hypothermia was life-threatening. Commercial flights cruise at 30,000-40,000 feet, dropping temperatures to 58 degrees below zero.

In addition, the altitude causes a drop of oxygen, which can cause people to faint and damage the brain.

“We can have hope, by rewarming it and giving specific care, that cardiac activity will resume, but the big problem is the brain, which is the most sensitive organ. I don’t see how he could escape without irreversible damage,” aviation Dr. Gilles Daphinet told Le Parisien, as translated by Google.
