Patrick Mahomes battled through a painful ankle injury to lift his team to the AFC Championship with a 27-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Kansas City Chiefs, however, may be fortunate that the star quarterback’s injury is not worse.
An MRI confirmed that Mahomes suffered a high-ankle sprain in Saturday’s victory, according to multiple reports. While that’s not ideal for the Chiefs, a source told ESPN that Mahomes‘ injury is “nothing more than that.”
After beating the Jaguars, Mahomes said he‘ll do “whatever I can” to play next weekend.
“Luckily for us, we played the early game on Saturday, so we get an extra almost half a day that I can let that ankle rest,” Mahomes told reporters.
Mahomes has reached the AFC Championship in all five years that he has been a full-time starter. The quarterback injured his ankle late in the first quarter when tackled by defensive end Arden Key. Though he missed a series, Mahomes returned to action and threw for 118 yards and a touchdown on 12 of 18 passing after the injury.
Nothing more than that was meant as in, No other damage aside from the high ankle sprain, which is a significant enough injury on its own.
