Sen. Ron Johnson accused Democrats on Sunday of only being open to policy changes on the southern border because the record flow of illegal immigrants poses problems for President Biden’s reelection.

“Right now, the only threat they see is to Biden’s reelection, which is why they’re starting to do something about it,” the Wisconsin Republican said on the Fox News Channel program “Sunday Morning Futures.” “This is so unprecedented, it’s going to take unprecedented actions to fix it.”

Negotiations on border security continue in the Senate as part of a broader national security aid package for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan. The talks are in response to Republican demands as an average of nearly 10,000 migrants illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border each day.

Mr. Johnson is among the conservatives demanding more transparency from GOP leadership over the bipartisan discussion, and he was skeptical Sunday that the negotiations in Washington will bear fruitful results on the border.

“Changing the legislative language isn’t going to work. We need to stop this flow,” Mr. Johnson said. “We need to show the world we are going to secure our border. We have to seal it.”
